Backup
Well planned backup system is extremely important for number of reasons: for example your device can brake or be stolen or lost,
there may be a fire, the application can malfunction, you can be hacked or you could accidentally delete some data.
It is not enough to make backups to your device. Some of the backups must be outside of your device and your place of use.
Backups should be automatic and also manual from critical points of your process.
The application makes automatic backups controlled by the attributes you have set in Settings. The backups are done
to your device and to the cloud service you have set up in Settings. You have to make device backups regularly so that
some of the local backups are secured in a separate disk/cloud service.
Automatic backups
-
Emergency backup
- The application makes an emergency backup every 24 hours
- The emergency backup is in your device
- There is no automatic emergency restore except when the Settings are lost
- If the initial data population fails in startup, there appears an error message: Data error - restore data!
- If that happens, you should do a restore: Manage backups + restore or Restore from emergency backup
-
Local backups
- The local backup happens automatically every time the device backup period expires in Settings
- The number of kept local backups is controlled by the Settings attributes max size and max number
- In Windows you can see the local backup folder by clicking Backup locally. Be sure to include this path to your device backup plan.
-
In Android the local backups are in the internal memory. If you have a shortage of internal memory, you should limit the number of local backups accordingly.
You can monitor your memory consumption from device Settings / Applications / TinyClerk.
-
Cloud backups
- The cloud backup happens automatically every time the cloud backup period expires in Settings
- The number of kept cloud backups is your responsibility
- In Windows the path to the cloud backups is in the Settings
- In Android the destination is in the cloud backup dialog
Maintenance menu functions
-
Backup locally
- When you click this row, you make a new local backup
- The control moves to the Manage backups view
-
Backup to cloud
- When you click this row, you make a new cloud backup
- In Windows the control moves to the Manage backups view
- In Android the cloud backup starts a save dialog in which you set the destination
-
Manage backups
- First there is a list of device backups
- In Windows there is then a list of cloud backups
- They are in time order the newest first
- The spiral arrow -control does restore from that backup
- The trash bin -control deletes that backup
-
If you want to restore a backup from another location:
- In Windows first you have to copy the backup to the device backup folder, after that you see it in the list of device backups and you can do the restore
- In Android you give the source destination in the restore from cloud dialog
- Settings are not restored with a normal restore, only with the emegency restore
-
Restore from emergency backup
- This restores the emergency backup the application has made automatically
- The emergency backup is done in periods of 24 hours
- So you probably lose some work
- When you click the row, you see when the backup was made
- The backup id is: yyyy-mm-dd-HHMMSS
- If you have a newer backup in Manage backups view, you should use that instead
- Also the Settings are restored in emergency restore
